  • Amazon opens new R&D centre

    Amazon is opening a new R&D centre in Cambridge dedicated to developing drones. The existing R&D lab will be used for Amazon’s delivery drone initiative, Prime Air.

  • GV invests in Abundant Robotics

    GV (formerly Google Ventures) is investing $10 million (£7.7 million) in Abundant Robotics, an apple-picking robotics company. Others investing in the company include BayWa and Tellus partners.

  • GM launches Maven Gig

    GM’s mobility department, Maven, has launched Maven Gig to give gig workers an easy way of obtaining vehicles for short trips, like food and grocery deliveries. As well as allowing users to share rides, the vehicles are inclusive of insurance, free charging, and unlimited miles.

  • Houzz launches AR mode

    Online furniture company, Houzz, has launched “View in My Room 3D”—a basic augmented reality mode to help consumers visualise how furniture will look in their rooms. Consumers can move the furniture around and resize to fit the room, then take snapshots to share with others.

  • Brain scans show link between brain age and health

    Researchers at Imperial College London compared MRI brain scans of elderly patients and found that the older the person's brain age, the more likely they are to develop negative health traits.

  • Research shows link between brain tumors and diabetes

    New research by Ohio State University reveals that cancerous brain tumors known as gliomas are less common with those who suffer from diabetes or elevated blood sugar.

  • CRISPR/Cas9 successful in removing HIV

    Scientists successfully ‘snip’ HIV virus from mouse cells using the CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The team of scientists from universities in the US and China could be at the forefront of genetic solutions to some of the world’s worst diseases.

  • Rosemary oil enhances memory

    Study conducted by scientists at Northumbria University shows groups of children in a room diffused with rosemary oil perform significantly higher in memory tests than a control group.

  • Amazon publishes new patent for Alexa

    Amazon recently published a patent for the Alexa-powered voice controlled devices after work lasting more than four years. The system links existing cellphone numbers with the Alexa devices and identifies authorised users by their voices.

  • Nintendo wins patent battle against RecogniCorp

    Earlier this week, the U.S Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued a new precedential decision that RecogniCorps patent is not patent eligible because it describes an abstract idea of encoding and decoding image data.
