On Wednesday, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) upheld a series of patents on gene editing technology by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. The patents have been awarded for a DNA altering technique called CRISPR.

This has been a year of growth for Intellectual Property in Australia. IP Australia (patent office) received 28,605 standard patent applications in 2015, an increase of 10 per cent from 2014 recording a 14 per cent growth year-on-year. Designs are up six per cent, and plant breeder’s rights (PBRs) five per cent.

The importance of vision
Since last year, there have been many moments where I have found myself wondering about ways to define PatSnap's vision and mission more clearly. It always leads me back to a question that I find myself pondering a lot, namely whether all founders have a clear vision from the day that they founded their company or whether the vision is always a work in progress.
Evan Spiegel, a student at the time enrolled at Stanford, founded Snapchat in 2011. Upon creating the app he dropped out of college to focus all of his attention on the messaging technology. PatSnap Insights reveals that in the last 6 years the company has applied for an increasing number of patents each year, which might seem strange as the company has only one product. Snapchat’s innovation rate has already therefore hinted towards the desire to diversify and create new products for some time. At the end of September 2016 this was confirmed, as the company renamed to Snap Inc, in line with its increasing product footprint.
