America: The land of the free, and the home of the software patent?

As a result of the Alice Corporation vs CLS Bank ruling, software patents are taking center stage in a heated debate which poses important questions about the nature of patent protection and patentability. We analyzed the state of software patents globally, and found that nearly 50% of all software patent filings are made in the USA, and US-based companies dominating the list of top patentees in terms of activity.
